Scope and Contents

The Joe Louis folders of the morgue span his public life and career, covering significant bouts, family life, military service, as well as posthumous honors and works. The majority of material are in the form of clippings and photographs. Press releases, programs, magazine features, and unpublished textual documents are also found.

Scope and Contents Lynching files contain reporting, research, and other documentation of lynching, primarily in the United States. Reporting on specific incidents contemporary to the time is found between 1926 and 1960, mainly in the form of clippings, full newspaper pages, and photographs. Some writings, notes, and correspondence pertaining to specific cases are also found. Files on lynching cases contain coverage of the incidents and their aftermath, such as investigations, trials, and public debate....

Scope and Contents Group contains coverage of specific lynching and attempted lynching cases, including the incidents themselves, investigations and trials of participants, and editorials regarding specific cases. Most coverage is contemporary to the incident; where coverage references past incidents it is noted in the scope and content note for the folder. Scope and Contents

Coverage of the quadruple lynching of Roger and Dorothy Dorsey Malcolm and George and Mae Murray Dorsey. Folder 3 contains photographs of lynching victims and scene, among others. Folder 4 contains a report on the incident by the Federation to Fight Fascism. Oversize material includes full pages of Philadelphia Afro-American from August 3, 1946 and likely the National edition of the Afro-American from August 10, 1946.
